  • 1.  Having MSW Students Serve in the Practicum Supervisor Role

    Hi folks!

I have a situation where an MSW student of mine has a practicum supervisor who just enrolled in our MSW program and will now be a student themselves. Thoughts on having one MSW student supervise another MSW student? (At our University, if the practicum supervisor doesn't have an MSW, we allow this. We will then also assign an additional "outside MSW supervisor." This way, the student meets with BOTH the practicum supervisor on site AND with the outside MSW supervisor (who is provided by our School of Social Work). Students with this arrangement meet with each supervisor separately. In this scenario, when the practicum supervisor is also a student, I have concerns about the practicum evaluation and grading. I'm not sure if it's appropriate for one MSW student to be providing the evaluation (or supervision at all). Thoughts on this? Has this come up for others? Any insight would be much appreciated! Thank you!

    Hi Jen,

We would see this as a conflict and would not allow it.  We have had a situation in the past where a current MSW student served as a supervisor for a current BSW student practicum and we allowed it because the MSW student met the requirements (had a BSW degree and several years of experience) and our BSW and MSW students have classes on separate days and typically don't interact.  So, we felt there was enough separation in that instance, but I'm not sure I would do it again. It still felt a little a too close for comfort when some concerns arose about the BSW student's performance.  I would definitely not feel comfortable with a student in the same program serving as a supervisor for another student.

    Best,
    Molly

Thank you Molly! I appreciate this input. I agree that it's probably best to not allow this as well. Thanks again!

I had this same issue arise this spring: a first year MSW student was placed at an agency where their activities were primarily supervised by someone who had graduated from our BSW program and was just accepted into our advanced standing MSW program to start this fall - which would put them in the same courses at the same time. In this case, the supervisor was not listed on the learning plan, so we did not learn this until midway through the practicum. Ultimately, I had a conversation with the practicum instructor - who worked in the agency but not directly in that department - and confirmed that competency ratings were being completed based on their observations and judgment, not the direct supervisor. Overall, the situation created a dual relationship that I would have preferred to avoid. The timing of the situation was tough, however, since the placement was established before the supervisor was accepted into our advanced standing program. I am now considering an enhanced conflict of interest/dual relationships policy for practicum sites to attempt to avoid this situation in the future.

On the other hand, I had an MSW student employed in a supervising role in a key program where other MSW students are often placed. We knew this was coming, and that student changed roles in the agency to prevent dual relationships, despite being in a different "learning center" from the other students and therefore unlikely to ever interact with them in our program. This was the ideal decision, in my opinion.

    Thanks Sarah,

This is really helpful. I will look into any policies we might have around conflict of interest/dual relationships. That's a great idea.

    Thanks so much!

Hi Sarah and others! Would anyone be able to please share any policy language you have around dual relationships and/or conflict of interests as it relates to practicum? Thank you!
