Topic Ideas for Field Instructor Professional Development (CEU) Seminars?

    Hi all,

I'm sure many folks are off contract for the summer, but I'm working on planning some Field Instructor seminars for the coming academic year t try to make life during the semester a bit more manageable.

We do these twice per academic year, usually for 90 minutes or 2 hours, and offer CEUs as a thank you to the social workers who supervise our students. Content is always supervisory-based and linked to social work field education.

More recently, we've done topics related to:

Reflection/reflexivity tools, environmental justice, safety, creating a meaningful supervision dynamic, and creativity in competency-based learning (how to better connect  students' practicum work to the competencies.)

And some I have planned relate to: collaborative student assessment, supporting students with disabilities, and external/off-site supervision.

I have heard that many other programs do something similar, and I'm just curious what topic ideas have been successful for you? I'd love some new ideas!

Thanks, and I hope you all are having a lovely summer!

    Jean

Hi Jean- lovely to connect over this medium also!  I started doing more self-care with them in SIFI and in orientation, as well as our CEU offerings.  Setting an example about good self-care, self-awareness, etc.  allows them to think about bringing it to supervision more intentionally with students and staff.  It is helpful that NASW included more direct reference to it in the latest code of ethics.  It is also welcome as so many are working in settings that are stretched and they carry a lot of the burden to make sure services are provided.  We do some trauma-informed content, understanding  burnout,  neurobiology of stress reactions, etc.  So many good folks doing good work- since so much of our training is centered on students, we thought it would be good to center supervisors as well.
