Hello all,
There are two books I would recommend. I have used both.
The first book is by Cynthia Garthwait from Pearson, "The Social Work Practicum: Preparation for Practice". This work book has integrated assignments the students can complete by pulling information from their practicum agency. For example, there is a chapter, "The Organizational Context of Practice". The chapter gives a great overview, also there are short assignments with questions specifically geared to have the student research how the organization approaches practice with the client population. Other chapters reflect the same process. The first chapter allows the students to complete a self-assessment before starting practicum and they can complete the same assessment as a post after practicum. I used this book through both semesters of practicum.
The second book is by Nancy Summer from Cengage, "Fundamentals of Case Management Practice-Skills for Human Services". I am working with my seniors on case management practice based on the Certified Case Manager credential. This work book does a really good job explaining case management practice to social work students. I use the NASW Codes of Ethics in my weekly conversations to we don't lose the social work context of practice. What I like about this book is what comes with it. Cengage has MindTap, a simulated online program that provides video case studies entitled, " Helper Studio"; Knowledge Check-which allows students to answer a few questions to test their understanding before they read the chapter and the end of the week quiz. There are other simulated activities, but I choose what is appropriate for my students and where they are in the practicum process. You can have the opportunity to review some of the resources connected to the book.
I hope this helps. Karen

Hi Dory,
Welcome to Field Education! I like this book because it is generalist and does a great job integrating the competencies.

Hello! I am a new Field Director and would like to select a new textbook for our practicum seminar course. The current textbook has a clinical focus that is not specific to social work; I would like one geared towards BSW levelgeneralist social work practice. I'd appreciate any recommendations!
