I wanted to get other people's feedback on what is being done regarding addressing student mental health while in school and in practicum. Are there any assessments completed? Additional support/resources? We have had students who become overwhelmed during practicum or are dealing with ongoing mental health struggles.

    Thank you!

    Hello Jostalynn,

Thank you for bringing this subject to the forefront. We have been having this conversation since the start of the semester. Most of my field education class centered on on student anxiety, exhaustion, and state of overwhelm that has extended far past the state of students in years past. One thing we are trying to do is launch two launch and learns for students to address anxiety and the field event and chronic overwhelm.

In generally, I would love to collaborate on something with you or other Directors who are confronting this issue. Please let me know if you are interested in this.

I agree as well! I would love to collaborate on any resources or implementation of assessments to better serve and help our students during this time of their academic and professional journey. I think this could be a great topic to consider to CSWE Field Institute as well!

Hi, Jostalynn. I 100% agree with you that the stress level for most of our students is off the charts. Our program used to require students to have at least four hours of personal counseling during the program, but it just got too difficult to track, so we discontinued that rule. Our school does have free online or in-person counseling, so we refer students to that often. We do not do any assessments, but I think that's a great idea.

Hello Leigh Ann, I am curious as to who provides this counseling support. Thank you in advance.

Utica has its' own health and wellness center, with licensed therapists (we've also placed several MSW students here for internships). The school also partners with a company called UWill. It is a telehealth model, so students can make appointments on their own time.

Aloha - as a preventative and stress-management strategy we address self-care in a very intentional way and incorporate it into the field experience. My colleagues and I are presenting an e-poster on this at APM next month. The short version: they do self-care planning at the start of each semester and participate in a Self-Care Accountability Buddies Program that we designed (which includes an assessment). They get to count one hour per week of buddy self-care time in their practicum hours. (See our poster companion site for a preview of the programs and the poster.) We love talking field and self care - so come see us at APM or reach out via email!
