  • 1.  Spring Starts and Practicum

    Greetings! I hope you are all doing well. We are considering adding a full spring start to our MSW program. We have traditionally only done a fall start and do not offer courses in the summer. I am curious if other programs are doing a spring start and how you are managing practicum placements? Are students  doing a block placement  during one semester, starting in the spring taking a break during the summer and returning to the same practicums?  If anyone has thoughts, experience with these questions, I would love your feedback.

    Hi Molly,

     

    We had a part time cohort of MSW students who would start in the summer and do a 2 semester placement – summer and fall.

     

    One of the things we ran into was that this timing seemed to throw agencies a little.  They had been so accustomed to the traditional fall/spring placement that they would get confused.  This just took extra communication from us and the students making sure they knew the placement timing.

     

    Also, for us the summer semester was a shorter semester.  This did create some inequity for the students because the hour expectation was the same but they had less time to accomplish the hours.

     

    The final thing to keep in mind is all of the "other" support you provide for the students and agencies is now not aligned with the rest of the program.  This meant for us twice the orientations, communications, etc.  When everyone is on the same timing it makes it easier to roll the administrative stuff together ensuring everyone gets the same supports.

    Molly, we place year round and currently have students in field 1 now for summer/spring. We are also placing field 3 students for summer/fall. We can offer blocks but also just stress that they will need to do additional hours, minimum of 20, during the semester since summer is shorter.
