Hello Social Work Field/Practicum/Internship community! I have had a couple issues come up recently regarding field agencies and billing for internship activities. I know rules can be different from state to state and provider to provider (i.e. Medicaid, Aetna, BCBS, etc.), but I'm curious specifically what folks' understanding is of rules about agencies billing for intern work, when it is allowed, when it isn't, and especially as it relates to North Carolina where I'm located, but also Virginia, where I have an online student placed this semester and questions have come up. The agency where the Virginia student is placed, has trained our BSW student in Targeted Case Management and said that since she has received that training and they are one of a limited number of providers of that service, that they are allowed to bill for the student's activities in TCM, but apparently another employee at the agency is questioning whether that is correct. If anyone in either of those states would be willing to discuss with me further by phone that would be great. It also would be wonderful if there was some kind of state by state guide to policies, at least for Medicaid in terms of billing regulations around social work interns at the BSW and MSW level.
