Hi all, I'm curious to hear from programs that provide offsite group supervision/Practicum Instructors to their students when needed. I'd love to know how common this is, along with the going hourly/per session rate and how you fund this (e.g. built into practicum budget, part of a staff position, etc).

Our situation: we are launching online options of our MSSW and BSSW programs, and our students are required to find their own placements. However, some are finding placements at sites with no qualified supervisors on staff. We're considering offering online group supervision to those students and we're doing some benchmarking. Any info you can share is greatly appreciated!

It is very common for online programs to offer this "Offsite Group Supervision".

How Others Handle It

1. Who Supervises?
2. Students have a basic "Task Supervisor" at their placement site for daily help.

 The university hires a qualified MSW (Master of Social Work) supervisor to lead the weekly educational group online.

2. How Do Programs Pay?

 Money Source: The funding usually comes from the Field Education budget which is often covered by student fees.

 The Cost: Contract supervisors are typically paid a set rate.

  It  may generally ranges from $50 to $100 + per hour for individual time ( may have variations)

For Group Sessions, the supervisor gets a set fee (e.g., $100–$150) to supervise a whole group of students, which is cost-effective for the school.

This external group model is a practical solution to make sure all students get the high-quality training they need, even when their agency can't provide it.
