    Hello Colleagues,

I am looking for feedback, policy examples, and requirements you may have regarding students practicing with language "proficiency" providing clinical mental health services in languages of first or second language, with or without interpreters.  Wondering about the ethics of this? and everything else you may have already considered. Thanks in advance.

    Heidi,

In my 10 years in practicum spaces, I have never seen language around this, so I look forward to our peer's responses.

    Best,

    Warren

Trying this again with more clarity...

We have a student who is engaging in a clinical mental health specialization practicum experience.  The student is English first language, has declared themselves French language proficient, while they have not participated in a prior language proficiency exam/review.  The student wants to provide services to a "French speaking client".  The student's on-site Practicum Instructor does not speak French.  We currently do not have a policy regarding this practice.

We have many students who are not English first language, who engage in clinical mental health specialization practicum experiences within clients in their first language.  These students are supervised by on-site Practicum Instructors who speak the student and client's first language.  We currently do not have a policy regarding this practice.

Have you written a policy regarding either of these situations?  Are you willing to share your policies, thoughts, ideas, concerns, etc.?

    Thank you in advance.
