Hi Penny,
She is shadowing a social worker at the agency, but we wanted to provide additional supervision. The student works at the embassy where she intended to complete her practicum, but the embassy closed all internship programs due to recent world conflicts. The embassy happens to partner with the Red Cross for various services, and the embassy social worker made the connection for the student. If you are to consider international placements, I would look into government social service programs or large organizations like the Red Cross that staff social workers.

Hi Jennifer,
This is helpful. You provide supervision? Is that because there wasn't a person qualified through the Red Cross Agency? How did you or the student find the placement? Yesterday my student emailed me to say that it won't work for her to study abroad again but our biggest challenge was finding an agency. She had not narrowed her country down so we didn't get so far as to reach out to any agencies. I'm sure this will come up again and I want to be able to provide future students with this opportunity.
Thank you

Hi Penny,
I currently have an MSW student placed at a Red Cross in location in Europe and she's having a wonderful experience. The program she was assigned to assists refugees, so services are documented in English. We followed our usual policies for a local placement, by establishing a task manager and I am providing supervision. The student also has additional support from international social workers employed at the Red Cross. I met with the agency twice before approving the placement, to ensure the student would have the support she needed. It's really been an amazing experience for all.

Hi Everyone,
I have a student that is very interested in completing an international BSW Internship. I have never had a student do this and am interested in connecting with others who may have helped to place a student internationally. I would appreciate any policies that you may have developed around international placements along with your tips and tricks in finding a placement. I will be meeting with the student to get a better idea of their thoughts on location and desired experience.
Thank you for any information you can provide.
