  • 1.  Field Placements connected with Theater/Arts

    Posted 5 days ago

We have two graduate social work students (foundation level) who are passionate about working with their local theater groups. Their hope for next year's internship that they may be able to incorporate this passion for theater on some level.

Does anyone have an experience combining theater with SW practice/internships?

Thank you. Wishing all a great start to your fall semester.

I will add SMSU Theatre Professor Dr. Tetta Askeland's Email tetta.askeland@smsu.edu.  As well as Professor Laura Mueller-Anderson LICSW, laura.mueller-anderson@smsu.edu. and Professor Nadine Schmidt nadine.schmidt@smsu.edu

Laura has been working with theatre to explore simulations with the students, and Nadine Schmidt the professors in Theatre. With her Laura's background in clinical practice she could provide thoughts and insight for possiblities in this area.  Nadine has decades of experience in Theatre, and the changes in social structures that are affecting students.

This could also be something Dr. Tetta could speak to in regards to how social workers could assist students in theatre who are experiencing mental and emotional health concerns. Theatre students have an added amount of stress with the constraints of time-lines, costuming, lines, cues, and performance schedules.  As well as long hours of preperation before the opening show.

Similar to Student Athletes who, at SMSU now have a mental health program designed to encourage athletes to be aware of themselves and others who may be experincing the extenuating pressures of performance fatigue.  As well as the ability to schedule therapeutic sessions.

Both great areas for social workers to practice!

    Joy for your day,

    Nan,

You are AMAZING!  Thank you for providing me with these connections. I will be reaching out to them shortly.

Having been a student athlete myself, I absolutely agree with the idea of providing mental health support for our athletes. I know I personally would have greatly benefited from this kind of program in college. Would you be willing to share a contact at SMSU who is involved with this project? I would be interested in potentially setting up something similar at my university.

    Thank you!
