I am curious if anyone has developed their own policies regarding employment-based internships beyond what CSWE says?

    Thank you for your time!

    Hi,

Good question! We have continued to evolve our policies based on student/field educator/liaison feedback. We've put together a website that has a breakdown of our policies, as well as some examples. Additionally, we require students who count any regular work hours as field to complete a capstone project. The project component has received positive reviews from students and agency reps. https://socialwork.buffalo.edu/education/msw-field-education/field-placement-process/employment-based-field-education.html

    Patricia,

Hello! This is something we've been working through since CSWE confirmed that the employment-based standard was changing. Our approach is to start with the end in mind - what are the student's goals in terms of future field of practice? What do they need to learn/practice in practicum to move toward those goals? Then, we consider the general goodness of fit of their organization to serve as a practicum in general. Finally, the question is how well the workplace can and will provide learning opportunities for the student which align with their professional goals. It's certainly a lot messier than our old policy, but offers more flexibility for students and honors that some workplaces are truly very motivated and invested in developing their employees.

Here's a link to our Employment-Based Placement Guidelines and Form on our website.

I'm very interested in seeing how other programs are handling this and the language they are using with students!

    Best,
    Sarah
