Kate M. Chaffin, LAPSW, is an associate professor of practice and director of the online MSSW program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.  Kate is also a doctoral student at the University of St. Thomas School of Social Work. Empowering women and their varying intersectionality points as students and faculty has been the focus of her career. Kate's research area is best practices in online social work education, specifically in feminist perspectives. She is a member of the Council on the Role and Status of Women in Social Work and believes in the importance of feminist scholarship, practices, and mentorship. One of Kate's mentors is Dr. Sherry Cummings, who has supported her over the last 13 years in building a nationally recognized online MSW program.

Dr. Sherry Cummings is a professor and associate dean for the University of Tennessee College of Social Work. She is a fellow of the Gerontological Society of America, past president of the Association of Gerontological Education in Social Work, and a John A. Hartford Geriatric Social Work Scholar. Dr. Cummings' research area focuses on aging and mental health – particularly older adults with depression, severe mental illness, and alcohol misuse disorders. Kate and Sherry have published three articles and have had numerous national presentations together on best practices in online education. Her support, encouragement, and mentorship have been exemplary. While Dr. Cummings will be retiring this year, her open-door policy will be greatly missed.
