Social Determinants of Health and Public Health Social Work

Jun 11, 2020 22:43

It is imperative that social work grasp the implications of the social determinants of health (SDOH) model. Given the profession’s expansive social justice goals, (the profession) must embrace the goals of health equity and link the actions of the majority of practitioners who work in health to it” (Ruth, Wachman, Marshall, Backman, Harrington, Schultz, Ouimet, 2017).

At the end of this presentation, you will be able to:

1. Define and identify SDOH and health inequities

2. Describe the difference between inequalities and inequities

3. Understand the difference between absolute and relative differences

4. Discuss possible mechanisms for how social determinants shape health

5. Offer possible strategies for addressing SDOH

6. Discuss the role of health professional training in relation to SDOH

7. Envision a plan for educating (non-health and health professionals) to address social determinants of health

8. Connect public health social work to ongoing work on SDOH
