Hello Ms. Kianna Mckenzie & Social Work Educators

I am honored to have joined this prestigious group of mental health professional educators.  FYI, I obtained my MSW from the University of Georgia (May 2021) and LMSW Jan 2022.  I graduated from Troy University in 2004 and obtained a Masters in HR Management.

I have to say that I am very excited to have become a Social Worker which had been my life long dream but due to life circumstances I left the Air Force ROTC program (University of Puerto Rico) in 1976 and enlisted in the US Army.  Following a successful Army career I retired with over 20 years of service and have subsequently worked 16 years with the federal government presently Department of Veteran Affairs (Atlanta, Ga).

Finally my goal is simple and that is to become the best Social Worker (according to veterans) by assisting veterans and their family members who are victims of PTSD, IPV, MST, OPOID/SUD (counter-transference having lived around those maladaptive behaviors) and obtaining my LCSW.

I look forward to reading your monthly articles.

I'm a new-to-the-profession Social Worker but have spent my whole career in community organizations supporting young people. I received my MSW from UNC- Chapel Hill in 2022. I'm  excited to bring my background in Art and Design (NC State University 2013) and commitment to supporting QTBIPOC (Queer and Transgender, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) mental health to this work as a way of serving my communities. I'm also passionate about macro work with programs and organizations that center the needs of folks who are subject to multiple forms of oppression - particularly at the intersections of race, gender identity, orientation, neurotype, and disability.

Greetings Esteemed Colleagues,
I come with an agenda. I've been a clinical social worker for 4 decades and became a civil rights activist after 2005's Hurricane Katrina exposed the Racist underbelly of this country to me in a series of crushing realities.

I began teaching Anti-Racism to social workers for CEUs in 2018 and recently presented a 3 hour plenary session at the LA NASW annual conference on Anti-Racism. The White backlash was nothing less than horrific.

I would like to see an instrument such as the Oklahoma Racial Attitudes Scale become a mandatory part of our training. Melody Loya's 2012 study on 179 NASW White social workers indicated more than 1/3 of them are not culturally competent. Respectfully, my teaching experience suggests our in-house problem is much worse.

Hoping for answers for a better future for our industry in leading the charge against oppression.

Here are 3 I found helpful. But it's my personal experience of teaching Anti-Racism that has compelled me to address this burning issue. One social worker complained, "I didn't come here to be bashed for 3 hours for being White."

The self-centering and Fragility were palpable. I was accused of "getting [Black] people excited in an unproductive manner." These are SOCIAL WORKERS! I will be presenting a 2 hour NASW CEU event in October titled: Clinicians' Guide to Whit Privilege, Fragility and Advocacy. This will be interesting!!!

Hello Everyone!

I am super excited to virtually meet you all and learn about all of your amazing contributions to the social work practice. My name is Morgan Todd and I am a BASW senior at Salisbury University. I am currently in a new intern role with our Office of Field Education. Throughout my final year, I am hoping to expand our field education options with the addition of placement opportunities, advanced trainings for students/faculty and extensive networking. This is my first time really being in the field in such a setting, as opposed to a classroom but I do have some background knowledge in more policy/macro level positions from previous internships that I am hoping will come in handy. 

Any and all advice is more than welcome, as I still have plenty to learn within this field. If anyone has any suggestions pertaining to the expansion of more flexible field placement options for remote, out-of-state and/or more non-traditional students, those are heavily welcomed too!

Hello Everyone,
My name is Steven Miller, and I'm currently working on my MSW at UW-Madison.  I'm in my Advanced Generalist years focusing on Mental Health.  My career goals are to teach at a University, at least part-time, and have my private practice part-time.  I want to specialize in Reproductive Mental Health due to my wife and my experience with doing IVF.  It opened my eyes to a lack of support for mental health and the lack of providers.  In Wisconsin, there are only 5 therapists that specialize in this field, all of them being women.  This is not bad, but for the males, it can be very limiting to choices on getting help with their mental health.  Research shows that receiving a diagnosis of infertility has equivalent to the psychological distress of receiving a cancer diagnosis.  Also, about 7.4 million people in the United States are impacted by infertility.  Now, I strongly feel that this number could be more due to not everyone seeking medical treatment for infertility, but regardless, this number is enormous.  Yet, in our social work education, we rarely talk about this.  Are we okay with the stigma of infertility?   To quote Dr. Ku, a guest on my podcast, "Infertility is an equal opportunity offender."  BIPOC women are 1.5-2 times more likely to experience infertility but have the least access.

I am a student member currently finishing my advanced standing MSW degree at Rutgers University - New Brunswick. I am a Management and Policy (MAP) student on-track to graduate in May 2023. This year for my MSW I am currently interning with the University's Climate Institute to support research efforts into climate education in public schools but I have interned with NASW-NJ and a local NJ high school previously for my BA in Social Work. I've been a social work student since the beginning of my undergraduate program, and have served in leadership positions throughout my college career. Hello everyone, 

It is a pleasure to meet you all! My name is Claudia Montas (she/her) and joining MFP for the 2022-2023 cohort. I am pursuing my Master's of Social Work at Florida Atlantic University, current intern at an addiction treatment center, group facilitator with Emotional Emancipation Circle, and Try-City Fellow.

My professional interests include continuing to work in addiction treatment, focus on intergenerational and complex trauma at the individual and family systems level, exploring the dynamics of spirituality at micro and macro level, and taking an Anti-Oppressive approach in my practice. It is my intention to work with immigrant & refugee populations and respond to man-made and natural disasters providing services to those who are recovering. 

I have two cats, Ash & Ahsoka, and one dog named Foxy. I enjoy reading, currently on Emergent Strategy by adrienne maree brown, watching movies, practicing yoga, cycling, and creating! I currently create candles apart of my self-care routine and to-do templates for fun and to keep me on track throughout my MSW process. Hey everyone:) my name is Crystal (she/they), I'm a first-gen 24-year-old Latinx located in the south suburbs of Chicago. My parents reside in Michoacan, Mexico where I lived for most of my adolescence.

I am very passionate about intersectional radical decolonized community-based social work, I hope to reimagine and create transnational spaces for neurodivergent folks of color to connect and where Spanish-speaking individuals, immigrants, and refugees can thrive by eliminating barriers to information, and resources, provide paths towards upward mobility and build frameworks for international collaboration.

I received my BSW from the University of Illinois at Urbana - Champaign in May 2020 with minors in Latino/a Studies and Spanish. I completed my field placement at The Refugee Center, a small but powerful non-profit resettlement agency in Central Illinois where I mainly worked with the Guatemalan community at the peak of COVID-19. After graduation, I was hired on as a case manager where I stayed until October of last year.

Currently, I'm pursuing my MSW at Dominican University through their Advanced Placement program in Global Social Work Practice for Immigrants and Refugees.

This was my first conference and I am in awe of the incredible efforts to decolonize curriculums and integrate multilingual and international research.

Hello Everyone!

I'm excited to begin a collaborative journey with you. I'm Stephanie Washington, EdD, LCSW-S. I returned to work following retirement from working as a school social worker (for 30+ years), and it remains my passion. I am currently an Assistant Professor in the MSW and DSW programs at Stephen F. Austin State University. My research interests include supervision and social work leadership (in school social work), signature pedagogy, and self-care for students and those entering the profession.

What brings me to the SPARK Community at this time is that I would like to invite participation in a research study which explores the perceptions of field liaisons and field instructors regarding how they prepare BSW and MSW students for effective practice in the field settings. I would specifically like to invite field directors to forward the survey to field instructors and liaisons and hope that those in the SPARK Community can take part in this research. As a new faculty member, I'm just starting my research agenda and looking forward to building expertise in this area.

Given my experience in education, curriculum and instruction specifically, I'm passionate about examining and improving our teaching practices with student interns and in preparing field instructors and liaisons to help students competently apply critical thinking and self-care skills. When I'm not steeped in research and teaching, I love to bake and spend time with family and friends. It fills my cup.

I welcome discussion/feedback around my research topic. I will post it to the community. I'm really looking forward to collaborating with this community.

Hello everyone!

My name is Deja Andrews and I have recently transitioned into the Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) Assistant Director role! As someone who came into the field with the goal of being a clinician, I would have never imagined being a part of CSWE in this capacity. I am a believer of being exactly where I need to be on my path even if it doesn't match the vision in my head and with that, I cannot wait to see what opportunities and connections this new role brings. 

I look forward to learning more about our community and gaining knowledge and perspectives that everyone shares! As someone who focused on clinical mental health as a clinician, social-emotional learning as a paraprofessional and substance use as harm reduction specialist, I would love to collab on ideas and best practices in these areas. I hope to gain some more understanding on mezzo/macro roles others here may have in the field!

As someone new to Virginia and city living, I'm definitely a beach bum trying to acclimate to this hustle-bustle lifestyle. I've found that I enjoy riding bikes here along the Potomac, thrifting and visiting some of the awesome local markets!

A little bit about me.  I received my Bachelor's Degree from Loyola University in Chicago, my MSW from Howard University and my PhD from Norfolk State University.  I am a NASW Pioneer, which may mean I have been around for a long time! Hey Everyone! I recently graduated from West Virginia University with two masters in Social Work and Public Administration. I moved back to the mid west and I am looking to continue my career in non-profit work. My professional goal is to utilize my natural skill set of relationship building to support motivating missions. This had led me to working in non profit fund raising and development but I am interested in any career path that allows me to cultivate relationships to motivate others to act, or support important missions. With the degree in Public Administration I am also interested in politics and the policy process. As I continue to look for work I am looking to connect with others, grow my network, and find ways to develop as a young professional. My interests are in technology, policy, human rights, fine arts, and higher education.
