Description of the program: Pop culture is part of the fabric of our lives as we are constantly plugged into various modalities of technology. We are constantly bombarded with images and references from the media, movies, Instagram, and other social media sites. Disability representation in media is often skewed and is a disservice to the neurodiversity movement. In this presentation, we will review examples of tokenized representation and challenge these portrayals by focusing on culturally sustaining practices. Culturally sustaining practices affirm the values of students lived experiences. These culturally sustaining practices, although not explicitly named by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), must include disability culture and neurodiversity. The neurodiversity movement that some schools embrace recognizes differences in students' strengths and weaknesses and looks to accept and affirm these variations.

Description of the program: Approximately one-quarter, 27%, of U.S. adults identify as disabled. Helping professionals can play a key role in supporting disability justice principles in their work with a variety of communities. For professionals, understanding disability rights and disability justice movements can provide inspiration for and pathways to more inclusive and affirming work. In addition to exploring disability movements, this presentation will offer discussion of the frameworks of intersectionality, critical cultural competence, and anti-oppressive practice in a way that acknowledges multi-systemic privilege and oppression for those with a range of social identities. Using a case example, we will discuss application of these approaches in helping profession settings.
