Field Directors

Good morning!  I am researching which state social work boards allow for CEs to be provided to field/practicum instructors for serving as a field instructor.  We are working with our board to be able to provide the CEs.  Currently, I, as faculty, can earn two CEs for each semester hour taught.  If I teach a 3 hour course, I earn 6 CEs.  If our field/practicum instructors can earn CEs, then, for example, if the practicum course is 10 semester hours, the field/practicum instructor can earn 20 CEs.  Which states are currently providing the CEs?  Thanks in advance for your input!

I am in Iowa, and our state offers CEUs for practicum instruction. Here's the language: 645-281.3(2)j. Supervision of a social work practicum student(s) from an accredited social work education program. A licensee may receive one credit for every 100 hours supervised, not to exceed six hours of continuing education credit per biennium.

I think it helps recruitment/retention to an extent, and it's certainly a fair reflection of the growth and learning that practicum instructors experience in their role!

Hi Joanna. I'm glad you are exploring this in your state. I collaborated with local area field/practicum directors a few years back and we successfully advocated to our Board to change adopt the following rule:

Specifically  (9) Supervision of social work practicum, internship or other field placement students enrolled in a social work education program accredited by or considered in candidacy status by a credentialing body recognized by the board, limited to no more than 6 hours per academic year. CE hours may be prorated based on completion of a partial academic year.

I've attached the survey I sent out prior to our letter to the Board to gather data about which states offered CEs to field instructors and the letter that we wrote to the Board. 

This is a wonderful benefit to be able to offer to field/practicum instructors and I hope you are successful. Please feel free to reach out to me directly if you have follow up questions.
