  • 1.  Podcasts that promote students' confidence and readiness for practice?

Good morning everyone in field education across the nation!

I am writing to see if you have any suggestions for podcasts that students can listen to. I have a group of rising BSW seniors, who will be starting their field placement in the fall. I wonder if you have any suggestions for podcasts that promote readiness for practice. Thank you all for all that you do! Katharine Dill

    Hi all,

We've asked students to listen to this TED Talk Radio Hour podcast on comfort zones and used that as a jumping off point for discussions related to field anxiety and confidence development. It isn't specific to skill development or the social work field, but I have found that it's a great way for students to connect around and normalize their shared feelings of anxiety and lack of professional readiness.

I teach BSW students who are in their senior year and in the semester before their practicum. I have an assignment where students select a podcast from the InSocialWork podcast (https://www.insocialwork.org/) that is relevant to their proposed practicum setting (there are oodles of podcasts.. something for everyone). Students listen to their podcast and then participate in a discussion board, where they are asked to summarize their podcast, identify why they believe it will be useful for their setting, and then provide a sales pitch about why their classmates should listen to it. They are also asked to provide at least one concrete resource - a website, reading, assessment tool, etc. - that is related to their podcast. Students are expected to comment on one another's posts, and do so primarily by trying out the resource. While the podcasts are not necessarily directly related to boosting confidence, I tell students that feeling knowledgeable about current issues/practices in the field will increase their readiness. They always like this assignment.
