    October 5, 2022

The countdown to the NADD Fall Meeting on Wednesday, November 9, 2022, has started!  I want to thank the NADD Program Committee and our two subcommittees for their efforts to plan this meeting.  We hope to have good attendance, productive learning, and stimulating conversations. Please know that the member evaluation feedback from the spring was used in the planning of this meeting.

The Fall Program will be posted on the NADD website on Tuesday October 11th in the afternoon.  You should print a copy of the program and bring with you to Anaheim as we will NOT have any printed copies.

The NADD Action Plan to Combat Racism

NADD's approved Action Plan to Combat Racism will remain a focus of our NADD meetings and actions. I attached a copy. The plan is also located on Spark in the NADD Community Library. This ambitious plan addresses areas that are important to NADD and our institutions. Our program on November 9th attends to items in our strategic plan and member evaluations from prior meetings.  For example, the panel of Diversity Officers in Higher Education is reflected in our plan and was a popular request of members through the survey we sent for your input.

    Morning and Afternoon General Sessions

Please pick up your name tag in the morning on Wednesday, November 9 in Pacific Foyer and you will be all set to attend. There is not a cost to NADD meetings as our conferences are covered by NADD membership dues.   General Session #1 will be a panel of four National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education (NADOHE) as panelists/consultants to respond to our questions and help us develop new skills and tools for antiracism work in our institutions. The panel entitled, "We Want to Know: Diversity Officers in Higher Education Speak" will be moderated by Dr. Keith Alford, Dean of the University of Buffalo School of Social Work.  Keith formerly served as a DEIA officer at Syracuse University.  Panelists are:

Clyde Wilson Pickett, Vice Chancellor and Chief Diversity Officer, University of Pittsburgh, Office for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

Tamara N. Stevenson, Vice President, Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer, Westminster College, Utah
James Felton, Vice President for Inclusive Excellence at The College of New Jersey

Kimberly A. Truong, Chief Equity Officer at MGH Institute of Health Professions

    The four session objectives include:

      Objectives

      1. Explore skills, tips, and tools for antiracism work in schools of social work
      2. Collaborate with Diversity Officers within our institution
      3. Introduce the NADOHE framework for Advancing Anti-Racism Strategy
      4. Identify challenges in our institutions in table conversations surfacing questions for panelists' response.

General Session #2 is "Leading Well in Impossible Times:  How Social Work Principles Inform and Inspire our Leadership Practice." This session will continue an exploration of leadership practice.  This session will be facilitated by Dr. Jessica McWade who began some work with us at our NADD spring meeting (2022).  Our member feedback from last spring expressed enthusiasm about her session with us and a request to bring her back.

The session's six objectives will be:

          1. Illustrate that effective leadership practice is informed and inspired by some of the tools of social work and social work education that you know well.
          2. Clarify your leadership challenges and identify strategies to address them.
          3. Remind you that you are already practicing effective leadership in some areas during these difficult, morale-eroding times.
          4. Understand that effective leadership is context dependent. A person can excel as a leader in one situation but falter in a different operating environment.
          5. Help you deal with being in "middle management" between overall institutional leadership and your own faculty, staff, and stakeholders.
          6. Enable you to share and learn leadership best practices from one another.

          Other meetings during the day

In addition to the two scheduled General Sessions, our fall meeting schedule will reflect a breakfast session for New Deans, Directors, and Chairs, the NADD Business Meeting, and lunch on our own. The day ends with a reception.  We hope some of our speakers will join us.

There will be a session after lunch on ASWB and actions to address licensing issues. Martell Teasley, Sheryl Kubiak, and Tamara Sue Davis have worked diligently on addressing the travesty of poor outcomes for BIPOC, bilingual, and older test takers.  We will discuss their work and what is needed from the members of NADD.

We reserved a brief time for networking before our evening reception, but due to the limit of meeting on just one day, it was difficult to allow for much networking time.  We will work to allow more networking time in the spring meeting which is 2 ½ days.

We are excited to see you and to welcome our many new members.  Please contact me with any comments, questions, or concerns at c1bonner@bridgew.edu.   Best to all, Carol

Please note that we do not expect any major changes to the agenda, but there could be some tweaks as we get closer to the day.
