I would love to hear how other schools support students whose writing skills are not up to par. We have come up with a writing support requirement that we assign to some students at admission, generally if their application is good in content but we are concerned they will struggle with the academic writing. Students assigned the writing requirement need to work with our university writing center for at least 6 hours on a specific writing assignment during their first semester and also need to attend one of the workshops put on by our library. We have only been doing this for about 1-2 years and are trying to assess whether or not it is effective. I am curious what practices other schools have used as we seem to be seeing a trend of an increasing number of applicants who struggle as writers.
