    Hello Everyone,

Our Field Education department will be taking on a student intern who is in their Foundational year of placement. We are curious as to whether any of you have had students use the field department as their student placement. If so, do you have a description? What activities did they engage in? Thank you in advance.

    Hi Aisha,

I have had a student working with me in our field office for the past few years. We have used this as an advanced level internship, with an administrative focus. I'm attaching our general description. Of course each student has had different interests, but they have all helped with the placement process for our BSW or generalist students, they have helped update field office policies, we also have them facilitate various meetings and support sessions for students, among other activities. Then usually each of them has a particular interest where they may hone in, one student was interested in job placement and did some research and collaboration with our career services office and then put together some additional resources to help students prep for interviews for example.

    Best,

Thank you so much for this information - could you share about how you were able to hit the competencies for the specialization year in this manner? We are looking to add a field office practicum student position, and your resources are extremely helpful - thank you!

    Hi Aisha,

We also have students interning in our field office and it is open to all student levels.  I've modeled some of my learning tasks after Lindsey's at WVU.  The job description is attached.  Similar to what Lindsey said, the intern can often tailor some of their projects to their own interests.  They have created training opportunities for students and field supervisors.  One student created an ADEI training with faculty panelists and breakout groups to discuss ADEI across various areas of practice.  It was very well received and students left asking for more opportunities to have similar discussions.  Let me know if you have any questions.

    Hello,

This is great information, as we also have a generalist student placed in our practicum department this semester. How do you address students meeting all competencies? Additionally, would case conferences, student educational groups, and training opportunities qualify as a mezzo requirement? Any ideas to ensure our student is meeting competencies would be helpful.

    Hi Atensia,
Students have easily been able to meet all of the competencies in the placement.  There are numerous macro opportunities but also plenty of ways to get micro and mezzo interactions with students and student groups.  I've never had an intern attend a meeting about another student before as we try to keep them out of remediation issues for privacy reasons but I think the other things that you mentioned would be fine.  If there is a particular competency that you think might be a struggle for the student to attain, let me know and I'd be happy to brainstorm ideas with you.
