  • 1.  BSW Program Placements w/out B/MSW overseeing

    Posted Aug 10, 2022 21:40
    Good Evening,
I have a situation that I'm hoping another program has experienced and is willing to share how they handle the situation.  We are in a very rural area with placements that do not have a B/MSW as a field instructor.  These students will need to receive "something extra" to cover this.  In the past, we've been able to divide our groups to give these students their own section; however, that is not going to be possible this year.

I would appreciate any suggestions that you may have.

    Thank you

We have used our alumni in the past to provide supervision to students that may not have an MSW onsite. It's worked out pretty well.

We usually ask some of our adjunct faculty, alumni, or current field instructors at other agencies to act as the FI in cases like this.  They can set up individual or group supervision (when there is more than one student) and do the meetings virtually.  We pay them a small stipend for taking on each student in this manner and it generally works well.  If the FI is not familiar with the agency where the student is placed, we have them set up a meeting to learn about the placement and get to know the supervisor at the agency.  That way they have context about the setting and the full experience of the student.

    Hi David,
Thank you.  I am working on finding former students and community social workers to do this for us.  So far, not many are responding but I'll give it a few more days.

I do have one former student who is interested but she is currently in TN.  I doubt that for licensure or for an MSW program that this would work but for the BSW program would the FI have to be in the same state??  I am sort of grasping to make this work.

Thank you for your willingness to respond.

Hi, Penny.  I don't think you have to worry about a license from another state for the FI, since a license is not required in any case for the FI.  As long as your former student has a BSW or MSW degree, they would be eligible to be the FI for a BSW student.  Hope it works out.  Dave

The license is not required for a field instructor, but our interpretation is that a licensed sw'er is not allowed to practice social work in states where they do not have a license. So is field instruction practicing sw? Our interpretation is yes, but maybe not if a license is not required for FI?

I would welcome others' interpretations or certainly some authoritative source.
