  • 1.  Hour Reduction Clarification

    Posted Apr 09, 2020 14:41
At the end of April I will have completed 768  hours of my placement hours in my MSW program. I still have another semester to go which will take me over the 900 hours mark. My program is advising "The 765 hour language may be confusing because it pertains to an internship that occurs specifically during this time. So if you did your foundation year internship AND clinical concentration internship this year-it would be 765 hours; however, it is only your concentration year that is impacted. So only the hours earned during this time are eligible."

We are in a 3 year program so our first 512 hours were completed in Fall 2018 and Spring 2019. Our clinical hours are being completed Spring 2020 and Summer 2020. Does this make a difference? I am trying to understand the logic.

Our choice for utilizing the reduction in hours is to "opt-in" for this semester and complete 217 hours. And then "opt-in" for next semester having to complete 217 hours. Any guidance will be appreciated. Thank you.

    Hello April,

Thank you for reaching out, and I hope that you and yours are healthy and well. We recognize that this is a stressful time for all stakeholders in higher education. CSWE's first priority is the health and safety of its program members, volunteers, staff and social work faculty, staff, students, field personnel, and the clients, constituents, and communities they serve daily across the nation.

The information you are seeking is located in our COVID-19 FAQs and Field Guidance, which states:

"This option for reduced hours is for students whose field completion dates occur by December 31, 2020. Students whose field placement completion dates occur after December 31, 2020, will be expected to complete the full 400 or 900 hours in compliance with AS 2.2.5. The field hours reduction option applies to all social work students in accredited programs, whether BSW, MSW, advanced standing, part-time, full-time, in block field placements, in concurrent field placements, attending bricks-and-mortar programs, online programs, summer placements, etc."

If you expect to complete all MSW field hour requirements, inclusive of both your generalist/foundation and specialized/advanced field placements, on or before December 31, 2020 then the reduction applies so long as your MSW program has opted to adopt the field hours reduction.

Please note that this option is at the program's discretion. I empower you to connect with, and share feedback directly with your MSW program director and field director regarding the program's contingency/continuity plan and field education hour requirements. Should your social work program have any questions regarding CSWE's guidance, they may contact the program's assigned CSWE accreditation specialist.

    Kindly,

    Kat
