    The CSWE Public Policy Initiative (PPI) is sharing a funding opportunity from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Office of Minority Health (OMH).  The PPI is able to provide high-level context about this opportunity.

    The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Office of Minority Health (OMH) has released a grant opportunity for the Minority Research Grant Program (MRGP).  The MRGP provides two grant opportunities to support researchers at minority serving institutions (MSIs) that are exploring how CMS can better meet the health care needs of racial and ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, sexual and gender minorities, and rural populations.  The MRGP "supports research on the discovery and characterization of health processes, practices, behaviors, and burdens or issues that influence health equity and, in particular, research that address the social determinants of health that impact the populations provided above."

    The three goals of the MRGP are to:

    • "Develop capacity at minority serving institutions to research health disparities and social determinants of health;
    • Understand the root cause of issues - processes, practices, behaviors, and burdens - that lead to health disparities and identify replicable interventions; and
    • Strengthen CMS programs by disseminating best practices uncovered through funded research."

    Past examples of projects include "work to address health disparities among underserved African American men and underserved, racially and ethnically diverse preschoolers." In 2018, the MRGP awarded a grant to Sharon Borja, Ph.D., M.S.W of the University of Houston, and her research topic consisted of "Developing an electronic fotonovela intervention in Spanish to support posthospitalization symptom management, improve patient engagement, and strengthen patients' natural supports."

    An optional letter of intent is due June 4, 2021 and applications are due June 11, 2021 by 3:00 PM eastern time.  The total amount of funding available is $500,000 and the annual award amount shall not exceed $125,000.
