CSWE Government Relations (GR) is sharing a new Special Emphasis Notice (SEN) from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) on Health Services Research to Advance Health Equity. CSWE GR is able to provide high-level context about this opportunities.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) announced a new Special Emphasis Notice (SEN) on Health Services Research to Advance Health Equity. AHRQ releases SENs on an ad-hoc basis to encourage applications for grants with a focus on particular areas of research. For this SEN, AHRQ is interested in receiving applications to existing open grant programs, namely R18, R03, R01, and career awards, that "propose innovative and evidence-based interventions that advance the nation's goal of achieving equity in the delivery of healthcare services including reducing disparities in quality of care, patient safety, healthcare utilization and access, and ultimately, health outcomes." AHRQ notes that COVID-19 had a disproportionate impact on minority communities and aims to use this SEN to research existing "structural and systemic inequities."

In particular, AHRQ asks applicants to propose research projects that focus on health equity within the following areas:

    • "Maternal Healthcare Delivery
    • Primary Care Delivery
    • Prevention of Diagnostic Errors
    • Care Delivery for Persons with Multiple Chronic Conditions
    • Digital Healthcare Tools /Methods
    • Integration of SDOH and Social Needs Care within Healthcare Delivery
    • Nursing Home Care Delivery
    • Behavior and Mental Healthcare Delivery (including substance abuse)
    • Healthcare Policies (including changes in health insurance access, coverage and payment)."

For questions regarding the SEN and related research, AHRQ encourages interested researchers to contact William Freeman, William.Freeman@ahrq.hhs.gov.
