  • 1.  Virtual Field Placements & Group Supervision

    Hello, Field Directors!

Glad to be a part of this community (just signed up today)!

I have two questions that I would like to pose to the group:

    1. What are the requirements from CSWE around virtual placements (onground program & online program). Are 100% virtual placements permitted within your school/university? If so, in what program format and are they working (beyond telehealth?)

    2. What are the requirements/thoughts on group supervision vs. individual supervision? Both?

Thanks so much to the group in advance for your comments and thoughts.

    Best,
    Nicole Parker

    Nicole,

Hello! CSWE allows virtual placements - here is language from the updated guidance on COVID-related changes to field: "The COA decided to codify the following interpretation under the 2015 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS): AFTER May 31, 2022: The following may be counted toward accrual of minimum field hours required if such activities are based upon enhancing student social work competence: field supervision and field seminar classroom meeting time. Remote/virtual field activity has always been permitted. " Here's the link to this document: https://www.cswe.org/CSWE/media/AccreditationPDFs/DOSWA-FAQs-to-COVID-19.pdf

Several of our students have virtual placements right now and the placements will continue to be virtual for those agencies moving forward. For example, a MSW specialized placement in macro practice is with a social worker on a grant-funded project assessing a program in a city several hours away, so that whole project is virtual. Some of our BASW and MSW students do placements with crisis intervention programs where most of their duties involve answering crisis chats, and the service is run remotely. Our considerations are the quality of the activities and supervision that the student is receiving.

    Best,
    Sarah
