Erin L. Nau, LCSW, is a doctoral candidate at the Adelphi University School of Social Work. Empowering women and girls is Erin's passion; and it has led her to provide counseling and engage them in research.  Her research focuses on adolescent girls' self-worth. Erin is a clinical social worker with over 15 years of experience working with adolescents, adults, and people diagnosed with breast cancer and their families. Erin is a member of the Council on the Role and Status of Women in Social Work. She believes in the importance of mentorship and self-care. One of Erin's mentors is Stavroula Kyriakakis.

Stavroula Kyriakakis is an associate professor at Adelphi University School of Social Work. She teaches social work theory and qualitative methods in the PhD program and foundation practice and organizational practice courses in the MSW program. Dr. Kyriakakis's area of research is gender-based violence and the study of how women exercise agency in creating conditions of safety and wellbeing. She has experience conducting qualitative research across cultural, national, and linguistic boundaries with communities at high risk of exposure to violence. Her last study examined the process by which Mexican immigrant women affected by intimate partner violence seek help, while her current study examines the social service needs of women engaged in transactional sex work in the Caribbean. In addition to serving on various students' doctoral dissertations, Dr. Kyriakakis provides field instruction to Adelphi University social work students placed at a grassroots organization that assists migrants and asylum seekers in Athens, Greece.

Dr. Kyriakakis is the chair of Erin's dissertation committee. She is supportive, while providing unparalleled practical advice.  She has empowered her to become a confident feminist researcher.
